Gender, Peace and Cybersecurity in the Americas: Towards a Regional Agenda Building on the findings of UNIDIR’s recent publications on the topic, the webinar seeks to promote an interactive dialogue on gender perspectives in regional and international cybersecurity. It will also encourage a collective analysis of the relevance of these perspectives and their transformative potential in the Americas and the Caribbean region.
Potential questions for discussion include:
- Why do we need intersectional and gendered approaches to cybersecurity?
- What practical steps could be taken to integrate these perspectives into cybersecurity in the Americas?
- What are international organizations, OAS member states, academia and civil society doing to promote greater gender equality in international cybersecurity?
- What joint actions or strategies could be undertaken to integrate gender and diversity issues into international cybersecurity forums and discussions?
- To what extent are the cybersecurity and Women, Peace and Security agendas being linked at the national and regional levels?

A discussion on gender and cybersecurity and data protection policy in Africa, convened in partnership with AUDA-NEPAD and the Network of African Women in Cybersecurity, on 25 October 2022.

• Create opportunities to reflect on the opportunities and challenges for advancing cybersecurity and related policies in Africa, including through the lens of gender.

The Internet Society and its members recognize that strengthening human capacity in the field of cybersecurity is highly important to advance a secure and trustworthy Internet. The greater our ability to strengthen human capacity in cybersecurity, the greater our chances to defend organizations, industries and nations from cyber threats and attacks.
Within this focus in mind, the Internet Society organization membership team is inviting you and your colleagues to attend the next member event: "Cybersecurity: How Human Networks Build Cybersecurity Capacity". In this panel discussion we will focus, together with high level experts, on the community building aspects that eventually enhance the cybersecurity posture. Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge for South Africa
Atlantic Council and the Cybersecurity Capacity Centre for Southern Africa (C3SA) at the University of Cape Town, are partnering to host the inaugural Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge in South Africa. The Cyber 9/12 Challenge for South Africa is designed to offer students enrolled in tertiary education programmes across a wide range of academic disciplines in South African universities, a better understanding of the policy challenges associated with cybercrime and/or cyber operations. Part interactive learning experience and part competitive scenario exercise, the Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge for South Africa gives students interested in understanding and learning how to tackle and respond to cybercrime and/or to cyber operations, from a technical, policy, and legal angles an opportunity to interact with expert international, regional, and national mentors, judges, and cyber professionals while developing valuable skills in policy analysis and presentation.
Student teams will be challenged to respond to an evolving scenario involving a major cyber-attack and analyse the threat it poses to state, military, and private sector interests. Teams will be judged based on the quality of their policy responses, their decision-making processes, and their oral presentation to a panel of judges. Along the way, teams will work with coaches at their home institution to develop their policy skills and feedback from expert panels of judges will ensure that all participants have an opportunity to improve their skills, as well as networking opportunities during the competition.

C3SA Webinar “Identifying cyber threats and risks in SSA”
Exposure to cyberspace comes with a lot of opportunities and many dangers. Very often, members of the public have challenges identifying the threatening and the risky situations they are exposed to. The aim of this webinar is to describe and explain the main and emerging threats and risks to the lives of individual members of the public, and to suggest ways to identify an attack or a risky situation. The webinar will discuss malware, social engineering, denial of services, and intrusions; with risks ranging from, cybercrime (Fraud, privacy infringements, defacement, and vandalism) cross-border cyber-criminality, cyberterrorism, and cyberwarfare.
Through the various speaker's interventions, the session will discuss and assess key questions around cyber threats, cyber surveillance and cybercrimes in SSA such as the following:
- What are the main cyber threats to general members of the public in SSA? (In different spaces e.g., individual community member, professional, and enjoying leisure)
- What are the main cyber threats to businesses in SSA? (e.g., On-site, and Remote work, trusted professional network, etc.)
- What is the state of cyber-surveillance, cyber espionage, cyberterrorism, and cyber warfare in SSA?
- What are the most frequent cybercrimes and their impacts on SSA people, economies and countries?

Roundtable on Implementing Digital Transformation – A Case for Cyber Cooperation
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, in partnership with the Observer Research Foundation America and Research ICT Africa, are organizing a Roundtable on Implementing Digital Transformation - A Case for Cyber Cooperation on October 6 at 15:00-16:30 SAST.
This roundtable will focus on refining the understanding of the imperative of inclusive digital transformation and the concomitant security implications and risks of this transformation in Africa. Furthermore, to examine ways in which these concerns can be addressed, speakers will provide examples of initiatives related to SDG 16 and 17 (and other SDG targets) being undertaken in multilateral and multistakeholder cooperation frameworks, that are currently contributing to a more equitable, secure and stable cyberspace.

Webinar | The cybersecurity vulnerabilities of people in Sub-Saharan Africa
This webinar explores the cybersecurity vulnerabilities of people in SSA and makes recommendations for people and policymakers that enable frugal but effective individual cybersecurity practices.
Sub-Saharan Africa is a place where more than a billion strong, young, and dynamic people live. It is a space where most people have some knowledge of the new technologies and the cyberspace that they enable. They know how to use them to connect to friends and family, have fun, study, work, and look for opportunities. The cyber landscape of sub-Saharan Africa is still in its infancy, with an infrastructure still in the process of being developed, unclear cybersecurity strategies, poor cybersecurity regulations and standards, poor cybersecurity awareness and education, and questionable cybersecurity mindsets. These are vulnerabilities at the level of a country or a region. They suggest that individual computer and internet users are particularly exposed to cyber threats and risks. However, it is not specifically clear how exposed they are and the impact of that exposure on themselves and the rest of society. This webinar aims to identify the main vulnerabilities in the device (hardware, software, and platforms) and Internet usage (behaviour and practices) of individuals in SSA. Vulnerability in this situation stems from the exposure of individuals’ personal (Home and mobile), professional (Office + School), and sociocultural (Family, friends, and societies) critical domains to prying eyes. The aim is to describe, explain and suggest remedies to main vulnerabilities.

European Cybersecurity Skills Summit
The first ever European Cybersecurity Skills Summit will take place in a virtual format. Major industry CEOs and policy-makers, as well as representatives of the younger generation, are expected to attend. The opening talk will be joined by Emil IVOV, the Founder of Jitsi.
The summit supports the Paris Call and the implementation of the European Skills Agenda, as a part of Europe’s Digital Decade, to ensure that people have the right skills for jobs.
The idea of the summit is based on recommendations that emerged from a large consultation led by the Youth IGF in 2020. It involved youth, market and policy actors that tried to understand the market, challenges and approaches in addressing the cybersecurity skills gap in Europe.
The Summit, will be new way of approaching cybersecurity skills in Europe that will create better opportunities for the younger generations in term of professional development, social utility and participation in the digital transformation of societies
The main goal of the Summit is to create better opportunities for the young in the cybersecurity area by helping to eliminate the cybersecurity skills gap.

International Girls in ICT Day
International Girls in ICTs will be celebrating the 10th Anniversary this year. In this regard, ITU invites stakeholders to contribute to the celebration by organizing programs, trainings, and activities during the year.
International Girls in ICT Day is an opportunity for girls and young women to see and experience ICTs in a new light encouraging them to consider a future in technology. Since 2011, over 377,000 girls and young women have taken part in more than 11,400 celebrations of International Girls in ICT Day in 171 countries worldwide.
The Girls in ICT initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a global effort to raise awareness on empowering and encouraging girls and young women to consider studies and careers in ICTs. The initiative is committed to celebrate and commemorate the International Girls in ICT Day on the fourth Thursday of every April as established by the ITU membership.
