Details

Aim

The first part of the project took place in 2022 where Access Now provided reactive and preventive digital security support to at risk-actors in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus to mitigate the impact of ongoing digital security attacks.

In 2023, the project continues with the aim of targeting civil society organizations and human rights defenders in Ukraine and the border region who are at greatest risk of online attacks.

Context

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Access Now’s Helpline recognized an increasing number of requests for urgent digital security support due to high numbers of phishing attacks against Ukrainian civil society.

Furthermore, cyberattacks hitting Ukraine’s critical infrastructure and civil society are undermining people’s human rights and worsening the crises.

Outcomes

Expected outcome is that Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian civil society activists and human rights defenders get access to the digital security tools, resources and expertise to prevent the harmful impact of online attacks. This project will also help to increase awareness and understanding within the international community of the ways in which technology is shaping and influencing the war in Ukraine.

Activities

The project will conduct targeted outreach and provide rapid-response emergency assistance to civil society organizations and human rights defenders.

Furthermore, Access Now monitors and documents internet shutdowns within Ukraine and the region and assists civil society in circumventing and reporting shutdowns and network disruptions.
