Summary

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized the ALERT (Applied Learning for Emergency Response Teams), a three-day regional forum on cybersecurity for the Africa Region. The first day was dedicated to a series of presentations on current cybersecurity issues, and the following two days were a cyber exercise consisting of cyberattack simulations in a controlled environment.

The event took place from 29 September to 1 October 2014 in Livingstone, Zambia, at the kind invitation of the Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA). The purpose of the cyberdrill wasd to enhance the communication and incident response capabilities of the participating teams as well as to ensure a continued collective effort in mitigating cyber threats among the region’s national Computer Incident Response Teams (CIRTs).

The cyberdrill exercise was structured around various scenarios involving the most common types of cyberattacks while the sharing sessions provides a platform for cooperation and discussions on cybersecurity.
